The Vlog.....As a blog
I've hit another one of those points in my life where I've let the stream of content drop because of real life things. I've been trying to do Sunday vlogs but last week and today I'm just far to exhausted to get in front of the camera and try and talk about bullshit so instead of doing nothing I'm just delivering the weekly vlog as a written post.
In terms of what I've been playing it's basically my stream rotation and a little bit of Apex Legends. I've noticed that in Apex, when playing with with the rare Japanese players that actually have a mic, the idea of a not Japanese person playing on what they think is the "Japanese server" just blows their damn minds. Every game I've had starts the exact same way with "oh my god a foreigner" followed by "Isn't this the Japanese server?" They aren't being mean though so it's not exactly a problem.
So last week the reason I didn't make a vlog is because I spent a weekend in Osaka and after all that walking around I barely had the energy to move, let alone record a video. I was mainly there to visit my family who are doing some kind of cruise around Asia but we spent an extra day there to see some other friends and explore. While I was exploring I came across a surprising number of little retro game arcades. I put the pictures on Twitter (@Taurinensis) so go check them out there. The one thing I quite like about Osaka is that everything is quite close together. I can walk between retro arcades and they also aren't too far away from the main shopping areas so my wife can go off and do her thing while I'm getting a session in. Nagoya has some cool retro game places too but they are in the middle of fucking NOWHERE. I'd have to get a train and trek to one or rent a car or something which is WAY more effort than I really want to put in.
I also just had to take a trip to Silver Ball Planet, a really nice Pinball hall found in Osaka's "Ame-Mura" or America Town. I've actually done a blog post on it previously so check it out
https://identitygaming.blogspot.com/2016/03/silver-ball-planet-osaka.html
Finally, I've added Persona 5 Dancing Star Night to my collection and I also received Silent Hill: Book of Memories (yaaaay.....) free off PSN. I'm also finally getting a new computer soon that isn't a complete toaster that struggles to run Chips Challenge so not only does this mean I'll be able to PC game properly once more, but I'll also be able to improve the content of the blog, YouTube channel and even the stream!
I'll try to stop being a bitch and keep the content coming a lot more consistently once more! Thanks for the continued support!

Apex Legends
I mentioned this game in the vlog above but unless you've been living under a rock for the last week or so then at this point you've probably heard of this hot new title that's taking the gaming world by storm. A spinoff to title to Titanfall, it's a Battle Royale game that no one asked for but apparently everyone needed in their lives.
I think the best way to describe Apex Legends is sort of PUBG meets Overwatch. At the start of each match you are grouped in teams of 3 and 60 of you (instead of the usual 100) are dropped onto an island with no gear and it's up to you to find loot and kill everyone else until you're the last team standing. Of course there's a standard array of weapons to find and kill people with but to assist you in your killing each character you can pick has a different skill. For example, one guy called Bloodhound has skills that reveal people close by to him and as a passive he can sense "evidence" of other players if they did a thing within 60 seconds of you arriving. Another character, Gibraltar, is a big dude who sets up big fat shields to help protect teammates when you get yourself in a pickle. As of now there's 8 characters, 6 playable from the get go and 2 of which are locked and you have to "buy" with either in game or real currency.
When looting not only are you looking for guns, ammo and protective gear but you're also looking for gun attachments. The guns themselves, for the most part, seem neither here nor there and you're allowed to freely pick and choose whatever weapons you like based on your personal play style. What a gunfight really seems to come down to is what attachments you have for that gun. As you're looting you'll find barrels, stocks, sights, mags etc that will help you kill your fellow man and it's these items that make ALL the difference. In one game I had a fully kitted out rifle which turned my SMG into death laser but the next game I had the same gun with no attachments and could barely hit shit as the recoil sent my view flying about 180 degrees with every bullet. I quite like this approach since it allows you to play with whatever you want while in something like Fortnite I was always just looking for rare versions of very specific weapons every game.
The absolute best thing about this game however is the team communication. You can play with no mics and still be able to communicate really clearly thanks to an absolute genius pinging system. Of course, mics are better overall but if you get paired with some really annoying morons you can give yourself some peace and quiet and still be able to point out an enemy or a useful bit of loot for them. The downside of the coms in this game however is that if you DO have a mic, it's IMPOSSIBLE to mut it (at time of writing). This is unfortunate for someone like me who lives in a Japanese apartment because if my wife wants to listen to music while I'm playing then I risk getting mad hate as Celine Dion blares down my playstation mic. I could just unplug it but I shouldn't have to, just put a fucking mute button in goddamnit.
Of course, since it's a free game there are microtransactions but they aren't too intrusive. You can pay for currency or you can get an in game currency by leveling up and this will allow you to purchase characters or cosmetics for your character. Also when levelling up you get a pack that contains items like gun skins or character related voice quips and other things and the drop rates on these packs seem pretty good. I'm only level 13 and already have 2 epic tier skins and there is A LOT of skins despite the fact the game just launched so if you like Overwatch style lootboxes then this game has a lot to offer you.
Anyway, the game is free and it's surfing a wave of popularity right now. Will it kill Fortnite? Probably not but it's gearing up to be a decent contender for a quality alternative. No longer will you have to suffer the buggy, broken mess that is PUBG or the skid stain that is that Call of Duty thing. Worth trying once at the very least

Die Hard Isn't That Bad
So usually when I come to near the end of a game or after I've finished it I'll do a blog post on it, I've you've been watching the stream you'll have seen I'm doing a 100 game NES challenge and I've not really talked much any of the games I've finished on here so I want to talk about the game that was, so far, probably the most fun.
Die Hard came out in 1990 for the NES and basically follows the same plot of the movie. You are tasked with stopping the crooks of which there are 40 in the building and you have to kill them all before the timer runs out and they get away with a bunch of money. It's a simple game and it's easy to pick up and play in short bursts thanks to the in game timer keeping a single attempt down to about 30 minutes.
Now the game ain't perfect by any stretch. In fact, there's a hell of a lot wrong with it really. The two big problems with it, for me, are the controls are sort of crap which makes aiming shots and killing crooks way more stressful than it should be and the foot power gauge mechanic. I get that it was a thing in the movie and of course, if you walk over broken glass you're gonna fuck your feet up but in this game the gauge drops just from running. Considering this is a game where time is very much of the essence, the fact that you are punished for running is BEYOND stupid. This games lack of quality however has been well documented by our good friend, The Angry Video Game Nerd. The episode he did on this game, while entertaining, I think gave it a bit of a reputation that it doesn't deserve.
If you can get used to the shit controls and stupid foot system it's actually quite clever. For example if you kill a crook and steal his radio, you can listen in and find out where the other crooks are going. The crooks will of course wise up to you though and stop radio chatter, but if you used the radio to call the police, they will contact you and tell you where crooks have been spotted throughout the building. If you go into one of the lower floors and blow up a computer you can fuck with the hackers efforts to open the safe, thus giving you more time to kill crooks or if you spend too much time crawling in vents, the crooks will start attacking you through the vents. It's nice to see the game react to the way your playing and there's even a way to cheese the game by getting all the crooks to fight you at once at the end but this is stupidly hard to achieve. There's also a pretty decent number of endings for a game this old, most of them being "you lose" endings but my favorite is that it's entirely possible for you and the final boss to kill each other at the same time and the game will be like "You saved the day but you died as well, GAME OVER" and I can't think of that many games that give you an ending for a double KO.
So if you saw that AVGN video and wrote of Die Hard as just another shit movie tie in game, I implore you to give it a go. If you have no idea what I'm on about then go give it a go anyway because despite all it's glaring flaws its a surprisingly fun game
