So last night this Nintendo Direct went down that I didn't watch but I sure as fuck caught all the information about it via my Facebook and Twitter feed. Now I don't yet own a Switch and I sure as fuck want one. They've been restocked in a bunch of stores near me and I'm definitely not lacking the funds for the thing but I just can't bring myself to pick one up and this mini direct pretty much made it clear in my mind why.
On the surface, the Direct was pretty cool. They announced a whole bunch of titles that were coming to the Switch including a port of Dark Souls and (another) remake of The World Ends With You with a new extra campaign bit stapled on the end which kind of made me a little excited. But that's exactly the problem, there's nothing new on the Switch AT ALL. It's either ports, sequels or ports of sequels getting released and that goes for the direct and the current library of games.
Think for a second about what you're getting excited for here. Just taking the two games that I'm the most interested, Dark Souls came out originally in 2011, that makes it nearly 7 years old. TWEWY came out in 2007, that's over 10 years ago!!! Not that remaking or remastering these games (depending on how you view it) is a bad thing but is it really worth sucking the Switches dick for doing so? I've been playing this game for a long as time and the system is going to have to do more than that to sell me.
Now I understand that some people haven't played these games, especially TWEWY, so for some it's a reason to be legitimately excited but I get the impression that if you've been gaming for a long time and you have eclectic tastes then the Switch right now just isn't for you. It's a shame too because it's a really cool piece of kit that I WANT to own but I just can't quite justify the purchase yet.
All that said though, Shin Megami Tensei 5 will be dropping at some point and despite it being a sequel I'm an absolute sucker for that series so I'm going to HAVE to buy one at some point. I just wish the system had a bit more originality going for it. I'm sure one day it'll happen and when it does I'm going to run to the nearest shop with a fat wad of cash and buy it all.
What excited you the most about the Direct? What games from the current library are you enjoying? Leave a comment and let me know!

Yume Nikki: I'm Not In Your Dream
I don't think anyone I know personally has heard of this game, let alone played it so let me tell you about a brilliant little Japanese indie gem called Yume Nikki.
Yumi Nikki (meaning Dream Diary) is a surreal horror adventure game where you have to wander round some girls dreams and find items. Finding items grants powers but what you really have to do is drop these items (known as effects) into a big room to reach the ending. This game is so strange, so surreal that any attempt I make to describe it won't put across just how cooked out the whole thing is. It's a free download so just google it and give it a play, you will not regret it.
Anyway, yesterday I was linked to this website.
http://yumenikki.net/
Yesterday it was a countdown timer, and the cynical side of me wanted to just forget about the whole thing because after The World Ends With You countdown I now think that every countdown timer will just lead to disappointment.
Luckily, I was wrong and while we didn't get a new game or a Steam version or anything like that, I met the announcement with a smile. For those that can't read the Japanese in the above picture, it's basically saying that there is some kind of book adaptation of the Yume Nikki game coming out.
If you look at the website, the box in the middle is talking about a web manga, which I'm pretty sure is separate from the whole book thing since to my knowledge there is a clear distinction between "Novel" and "Manga". Finally, the bottom box mentions some kind of soundtrack called "A waltz for Yume Nikki"
Given how the games were I'm super interested to see how these adaptations turn out. Hopefully they'll get released before I have to return to the UK so I can have something to translate on the plane.

The World Ends With You for iPhone and iPad
So if you are into anything like video games, movies, comic books and stuff like that, chances are you are a jaded, bitter, angry individual because all companies seem to want to do is take stuff that you love and take a massive steaming shit all over it. This is what has happened with the new The World Ends With You announcement.
Now I tend not to pay too much attention to hype trains, I like to play a game with a clear head and form my own opinion on it, but about a week ago I was linked to this website
www.square-enix.co.jp/subaseka
All this website was the time I first viewed it was a countdown timer and some remixed songs from the original World Ends With You soundtrack. I got pretty excited for what was going to come at the end of this countdown, I was under the impression that if you hype something with a timer, then the thing at the end of the timer is going to be good, right?
FUCKING! WRONG!
All we got was this piece of shit, a fucking port for iPhone and iPad. First of all, the iPhone is not a good system for gaming, it just isn't. Sure, shit like Angry Birds works really well on this system, but big meaty RPGs like this aren't going to attract your average iPhone gamer. Most importantly however, the thing that made TWEWY such a good, interesting game on the DS was it's amazing battle system that utilised both screens. So way to go and fucking ruin that with your piece of shit one screen combat. The idea of having combat on one screen just basically ruins some of the interesting and challenging battles as a few of the fights would revolve around the dual screen mechanics (E.g. Taboo Noise, for those that know what that is)
It also fucks the game right up from a story perspective too. The reason the combat was on 2 screens story wise was that despite the 2 characters being linked, they had to fight the big nasties alone. If they killed the enemy, it would die for their partner too, but if they took damage, the partner would suffer as well. It was a cool concept that made the idea of combat slightly frightening from a story perspective, but now all that has been thrown out the window since they can just fight together now on one fucking screen.
There are lots of other things I could talk about that make the game seem shit, but I have to remember that despite all my ranting and raving, I haven't played it yet, so my opinion is generally not worth shit on this matter, but it just seems like a bit of a betrayal here. It might be pretty good, but I won't know for a long time because if square thinks I'm dropping 20 bucks on a fucking shitty iPhone port of a 2008 DS game, they have another thing coming.
Here is the trailer, people panned this shit so hard they removed comments and ratings.
