A while ago I posted my thoughts on a replay I did of God of War and I followed it up by starting to play God of War 2 and while I am having a certain amount of fun I can't help but be a little confused as to just how these games became so huge.
Now don't get me wrong, these aren't bad games by any stretch and the production quality on pretty much all the titles in the series are top notch but the review scores for these games are always really REALLY high and I don't quite understand. For example God of War 1 on Gamespot got a review score of 9.3 and God of War 2 got 9.7(!) on IGN! That's a damn near perfect score and maybe it's just because I've become cynical in my old age but I just don't understand.
These games do have some good things going for them such as great cinematic quality and an insane level of violence which is rather satisfying to watch after battling your way through a horde of enemies. There's also a decent variation in enemy types and the soundtracks are quite nice feeling appropriately epic for the tasks at hand and the main theme will pretty much stick with your forever after playing.
That said though, in the game play department these games are samey and a little dull. Combat consists of nothing more than mashing square on an enemy until the prompt appears above their head and then doing a little QTE sequence to finish them off. The game tries to give you lots of tools to try and deal with all the enemies such as magic spells and alternate weapons but there is very little reason to use any of them because mashing square is easily the best thing you have. If mashing square doesn't seem to be working quite as well as usual against a certain enemy then click in both your control sticks to activate Rage of the Gods which is basically a win button. Rage makes you strong, removes hitstun and makes your standard combo so insane and screen filling that even bosses don't stand a chance against you.
Aside from the combat the puzzles are insultingly easy at best and frustratingly obtuse at worst. There have been instances during my God of War 2 playthrough where I'll be stuck in a room for a few minutes not knowing what to do because the key to a puzzle is some kind of pullable block but the block just looks like a background prop so I end up stumbling on it by accident and I never would have known if it wasn't for the big stupid R1 prompt in the corner. The worst case of "puzzle" solving though is when the game wants you to find keys. Usually there's a locked door and another path, go down the other path, kill dudes, get key and then loop back on yourself so that you can go through the door. If this happened just once or twice but this is almost every single locked door in God Of War 2.
Like I said I don't hate these games at all but they get near perfect scores, glowing reviews and hordes of raving fans. If I worked for one of these websites I would have given it like a 6/10 for being a competently made action game with some annoying aspects and an over reliance on QTE for cool shit to happen. Devil May Cry let's you look cool as hell without using QTE at all but God of War struggles to pull of anything visually impressive in the combat without going into canned animation mode.
Still, despite my complaints I'm gonna finish off 2 and probably go play the third one again too, good bit of mindless fun after a stressful day.

Kratos Is A Shit Character
So recently I've been playing the God of War HD Collection for the PS3. God of War was a game I played a long long time ago during my high school days and while I enjoyed the first two entries in the series I never played Chains of Olympus on PSP (despite now owning 2 copies) or God Of War 3. I'm actually surprised about how little I remember about these games. As far as the first game in concerned I remembered everything pretty vividly up to the point where you go and get Pandora's Box and then it almost feels like I'm playing it for the first time once again.
Kratos, the lead character of these games, while not as universally recognizable as something like Mario or Sonic is a stand out face in the world of gaming. God of War is a big popular IP for Sony and people who are at least a little into games have probably seen Kratos at some point. Hell, even at the last E3 people were losing their shit for fat dad Kratos since there was a new God of War game on the horizon.
However what my current play through of the first game has led me to feel is that Kratos is just a bit of a shit character. Now the shitness of his character doesn't reflect on the quality of the games, they are good games, but Kratos is a completely unlikable prick.
His story seems to be that he was a general in the army who was pretty good at killing things but in some battle against barbarians he got his shit kicked in. So just as he's about to get his head smashed with a hammer he calls upon Ares, the God of war and Ares comes down, saves the day and makes Kratos his bitch. So Kratos does his bidding for a bit but one day wanders into a village and "accidentally" kills his own family. Pissed that Ares made him do that, Kratos vows to kill him and so begins the first game in the series.
Granted that I've not finished my re-play of the first game yet so maybe the ending will make me rethink this entire post but it feels like they were going for some kind of redemption plot line. Kratos wants to kill Ares, get his life back so he can stop being a prick. But it's impossible to feel sorry for Kratos since being a prick was all he was made to do, with or without Ares and my bet that if that whole silly family killing thing hadn't have happened then he still would have carried on in his hobby of draining things of their blood.
Playing as a hilarious asshole can be fun, there's nothing wrong with that, but trying to throw in certain story aspects to try and make us feel sorry for a character who is just a prick and nothing more feels silly. Like I said though, my memory of the first two games is fuzzy at best and my lack of experience with the third means that there may be things that they have done with the guy to make him a bit more likable but the first games attempt is quite frankly, laughable.

Stop HDing Things
You know I don't really have a problem with HD collections, at least not most of them. It's sort of nice to be able to get one disc and have all the Devil May Cry games available so that I don't have to change discs if I want to play DMC 1 instead of DMC 3 for example.
That said, I do think they are a little bit unneeded. It's not like I was sat here thinking "oh, Shadow of the Colossus is a really good game but it looks like shit and I can't play it anymore". The game looks fine on the PS2, and playing it now is just as much fun as playing it when it first came out. Sure the HD collection made it look a bit nicer but at the end of the day it's still the same fucking game.
It's not like all HD collections have been successful either, with Silent Hill basically ruining whatever legacy Silent Hill 2 and 3 had by convincing all new users that the game is a load of arse. Some HD collections even seem a little pointless, like God of War since it's not like original PS2 copies of those games are hard to find.
Well the reason I'm moaning so much about HD releases is because I'd rather see the money spent on that put into something new. One of my biggest problems with this industry is that there are too many sequels to things and some things are getting a little stale. Instead of pumping money into HD remakes of old games, why not try and create a new IP. Something new and exciting that we can all point and go "holy shit look at that!" instead of "oh....another Assassins Creed" or "oh.....more Call of Duty"
Even something like Metal Gear Rising would be fine where your making a new game within an established series universe. We get more of the story and characters we like but a fresh new way to play with them, which at least prevents me from being bored.
Basically, money should be going towards new stuff, not making old stuff prettier. Give me something new and not just an up scaled version of a game I played less than 10 years ago, goddamn it.

God of War Ascension Trophy
This story is so pathetic and petty.
So here's the deal, there is (was) a trophy in the new God of War game that was titled "Bros before hoes" which was given to players after they beat up one of the female boss characters. Apparently, this trophy was seen as misogynistic and was promptly changed by the developer. Holy fucking goddamn is that some bullshit
So lets start with why it's bullshit. The phrase "bros before hoes" is a phrase that has been around for fucking donkeys years. Basically for as long as I can remember this phrase has existed, and been used for years, but literally millions of people. No one complained about it being used then, but as soon as you put it in a video game everyone decides to use it as ammunition to take a shot because there are some people who see the games industry as an easy target for this shit.
That aside though, it made sense in the context of the game. You beat the boss called Fury, who is this woman, and I haven't seen the whole scene but some shit happens and you get caught up in this black goo and this woman is about to do something nasty to you. So this dude just pops out of nowhere, decides to betray the nasty lady (I think) and teleports Kratos to safety. If he's betraying this chick to rescue Kratos I'm pretty sure that's a good reason to use the phrase "bros before hoes"
The article I read on Joystiq had a quote that said "The text was offensive to some members of the community and impacted their enjoyment of the game"
FUCKING. BULLSHIT!
People are just complaining for the sake of it at this point. I mean it's fucking a trophy, it doesn't even have any impact on the game, it's just a stupid little message that pops up for killing a boss so that people feel like they actually achieved something. Also, when did people become such spineless idiots to the point where they are offended by shit like this? No one was offended by this message, people are just taking pots shots at developers because they see the game industry as an easy fucking target.
You weren't offended when Kratos fucked 3 women for experience orbs, but you were offended by a trophy message? Get fucked, "feminists" who complain about shit in video games aren't out for equality, they are just out to demonise men. The most sexist people in this whole situation are the people complaining. Piss off and let me enjoy video games without having to hear stories about your constant, pathetic whining all the fucking time.
